Cashless Catering How Does It Work

How Does it Work?

Working with your choice of identity card or Biometric technology, EasyTrace Cashless Catering delivers a complete catering management solution. The solution uses a Point of Sales (POS) unit that is centrally programmed with every item that the catering department sells. Once the student or member of staff has selected their meal from the counter, they present their identity card or their fingerprint (if the school is using a biometric solution), to the card reader or scanner. This accesses the student’s account and allows the cashier to enter the items selected. At the same time an image of the card holder is displayed on the POS unit, allowing visual identification by the cashier. The appropriate amount is then debited from the student’s account. No cash is stored on the card itself and this live-time transaction is visible to the student.

Card-Based System

Using a card-based system, the card is used as the unique identifier (i.e., the mechanism for identifying the user and accessing their records from the back-end database – Infinity). Everyone carries their own unique card, which identifies them as an individual and gives them access to the facilities that they are entitled to.

Cards are a flexible and non intrusive identifier and all personal and account balance information (e.g. for cashless catering) is held on the database not on the card, ensuring that students’ / staff money and details are safe even if the card is lost. Cards can also be used for identification or proof of age purpose.

The main disadvantage of a card-based system, is that cards can be forgotten, misplaced or stolen. Although this does not pose a security risk (as no data is held on the card itself) the issue of replacement cards is an administrative burden.

Card design is bespoke to meet your specific needs. You may select any colours, logos and images to use. Often the image of the cardholder and school logo form part of the design. Enrolment number is also often included to simplify administration and identification. Integration with third party applications – e.g. local transport companies and other community facilities (public libraries, leisure centres etc) may also be an option.
